The Role

As the COVID pandemic eventually shifts to being an endemic, Moderna is in a unique position to disrupt the healthcare space in bringing a diverse portfolio of therapeutics through new and innovative channels. Reporting to the Chief Commercial Officer, Arpa Garay, the Vice President, Commercial Strategy & Innovation will serve as a thought partner to the CCO and the rest of executive leadership team in shaping the Modernas global market approach with a focus on disruption. This leader will envision and implement new and inventive go-to-market strategies for mature and emerging markets, unlocking new commercial channels and changing the way Moderna engages with customers and patients.

This will be a newly created role centered around Modernas vision and commitment to disrupting the traditional pharma ecosystem. This role will spearhead long term strategic ideation and short term experimentation and piloting of unique commercial approaches. The role represents an opportunity to redefine a traditional market with a focus on customer-centric models that will lower costs, improve access and provide better healthcare for patients.

Location: The position will be based in Cambridge, MA.

Key responsibilities:

  • Partner with the Chief Commercial Officer and Executive Team to create unconventional commercial solutions that disrupt the existing healthcare ecosystem

  • Strategize and implement go-to-market plans globally, translating large-scale ideas into concrete actions

  • Lead the assessment of external opportunities and partnerships with companies outside of the healthcare space to drive impact across the value chain, focusing on Modernas short and long-term strategic vision.

  • Identify prioritized markets for geographical expansion and adjust business models to ensure the optimal approach for specific countries/regions, through various B2B, B2C, and B2G channels

  • Define what success looks like for new markets and channels and pivot accordingly, including allocating more resources to a given market or pulling out entirely

  • Establish influence within the company globally, collaborate closely with country GMs to successfully integrate prioritized market approaches

  • Leverage consumer market data and analytics and keep digital innovation at the forefront of commercial solutions and market disruption.

The Vice President of Commercial Strategy & Innovation is an innovative and dynamic role for Moderna. The ideal candidate is a leader with a track record of disrupting a conventional business model. This leader is highly strategic and can think big about out-of-the-box solutions and translate those ideas into concrete next steps. This person will have a depth of experience in shaping a global go-to-market strategy and a desire to challenge the status quo at every inflection point. The successful candidate will be a creative thinker with a consumer focus, who can roll up their sleeves, and see solutions through. They will have the drive and motivation to create change within Moderna and be comfortable with ambiguity.

This leader may or may not have deep biopharma experience. More importantly, this is a leader with a consumer orientation and understands how to develop go-to-market strategies that can provide access to various channels beyond the traditional sales and marketing models of the pharma industry. Exposure to the healthcare value chain, including payers, providers as well as pharma may be helpful but is not required.

This leader should have extensive experience in strategy and thought leadership, partnering with executive teams to transform their commercial models and driving implementation. They will have proven experience in corporate innovation and business models that have challenged convention. This leader will have a deep understanding of geographical expansion and experience in launching and piloting new markets. The successful candidate will ideally have some experience and understanding of the broader healthcare space.

The successful candidate will execute against a dynamic strategy while being guided by the Moderna values:

  • Quality, Integrity, and Respect: We believe these serve as the foundation upon which everything else is built.

  • Bold: We are wholly committed to realizing the enormous potential of mRNA technology to transform the lives of patients.

  • Collaborative: We know that the way to accomplish our goals is by working together, supporting each other, and respecting one anothers viewpoints. We act as one team.

  • Curious: We are intensely curious and are always seeking to challenge and improve upon the status quo. We believe curiosity is the heart of innovation.
